Increase of Childhood Mental Issues
Children who are obese have serious emotional and mental issues throughout their life as a child. They tend to have low self esteem and may feel inferior than most students in school. Many of their friends may start to be apart from the obese child. This can be serious if the child starts to have emotional issues like depression. Children who are obese may feel like they do not fit in a group, or the group may not think he is good enough to be in there with them. All this may cause the child to have suicidal thoughts. He may be thinking negative about himself, he even my cut himself because of his overweight. Based on the article "Obesity can be harmful to your child's mental health", it talks about how being obese can affect the thinking of a child. It admits, " The study also reported that obese boys and girls with low self-esteem had higher rates of loneliness, sadness and nervousness." This is one way that the child can be emotionally sad.
Children who feels
depression because of their over weight have low self esteem, or is being
bullied by others, and have low grades in school. Many end up committing suicide.
In the article of "Obesity can be harmful to your child's health", it
admits, “The study found that 26 percent of teens who were teased at school and
home reported they had considered suicide, and 9 percent had attempted it.
Suicide is the third leading cause of death among adolescents. (Source:
Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, "Associations of
Weight-Based Teasing and Emotional Well-being Among Adolescents," August
2003)".
The child may start isolating
himself or herself because of his or her overweight. Children with this type of
mental issue may start hurting himself or others. They may not be very active
in activities with other children.
Children with these types of
mental issues may feel that they are fat, when they are not. This affects there
thinking, and can bring suicidal thoughts. Not all teens and children that are
obese only have emotional issues, but children that eat unhealthy have a hard
time concentrating on their work. They do not eat nutritional food that can
help them stay focus in there school. They may feel depressed or angry. They
can feel anxious and may have problems of self control. The child may think
that everyone is against him or her, this can affect the child in a long term
period. In the article of "Mental Health, Wellness, and Childhood
Overweight/Obesity", it describes the percentage of behaviors because of
overweight. The article admits, "Unhealthy weight
control behaviours were reported by 57% of girls and 33% of boys, and extremely unhealthy behaviours
were reported by 12% girls and 5% of boys among 4,476 adolescents in public
schools in Minnesota [37]." Here are seen the percentage of boys and girls that have an
unhealthy behavior because of there unhealthy weight.
More children are having
mental issues than in the past because of there own weight. More children and
adolescents are thinking about suicide. There are many more ways that this can
be looked at. The child could have mental disorders. They may not be able to
think straight, this is one way we can see how obesity is affecting their
mental mind. They may think that they are going to be always obese and that
they cannot fit anywhere in the group in school or in sports. Parents should be
aware of these signs at all time. Talking with the child's teacher can help
parents know if their child is at risk of hurting himself or others.
