Solution and Plan of Action

Children from the United States are suffering from the poor malnutrition that they are given in their

homes. Many children are suffering from heart disease and type two diabetes, As this is becoming a

more epidemic issue, there are also actions being taken by parents and teachers. Parents are finding

solutions to the problem. The child is learning to eat healthier and he or she is finding new ways to

loose weight by physically moving more. Playing sixty minutes each day may help children lose

weight. As the children play, they are burning calories and are exercising their muscles. This is a

good way to prevent health issues along the way and a good way to cut down some calories. The

CDC recommends the child to balance the food that he or she eats and to have healthy eating habits.

The CDC admits, " To help your child maintain a healthy weight, balance the calories your child

consumes from foods and beverages with the calories your child uses through physical activity and

normal growth."  Balancing food and exercise may help the child to cut down extra weight on him or

her.

Choosing wisely what foods to consume may help the child eat healthier and loose weight.

Eating healthier can improve the child's physical health and mental health. Parents can make beautiful

dishes and good snacks for the child to eat. This can be a combination of vegetables and fruits.

Eating healthier can improve the child's health and mind. This can help the child to stay focus in

school and to improve their grades.

There are other ways to improve the child's health, some of the ways are by adding chores to do in

the house or outside cleaning the yard. This keeps the child physically active and this helps the child

learn skills in their lifetime. The CDC states, "Instead, encourage your children to find fun activities to

do with family members or on their own that simply involve more activity." The more that the child is

active, the lesser the chances are for him or her to become obese or overweight. Another way that this

can improve the child's health are by reducing the stress that the child may have. By doing these

activities, the child may improve their health as a young teen. Having a good healthy life and good

eating habits can improve their health as an adult.

Image result for food industries

Industries can reduce the amount of sugar brought in the products that teens and children are

consuming. By lowering the amount of sugar in products can improve the health of students and

children around the U.K. In the article, "Childhood obesity: a plan for action", it admits "As a first

major step towards tackling childhood obesity, we will be introducing a soft drinks industry levy

across the UK. In England, the revenue from the levy will be invested in programmes to reduce

obesity and encourage physical activity and balanced diets for school age children."

If more teens exercise, there could be fewer obesity rates, and if the industries lower fats in

foods, there could be also a decrease in obesity rates on teens.

Reflection of the nine weeks

In the past, I struggle to understand some information that was given to me. I worked hard to

improve my grades. One of my biggest mistakes that I have made were to not study enough for the

tests that were given to me. I study but I did not study enough for the test. I use my time to work on

other English homework but I did not manage my time very well. I did my homework but there was a

time in this class that I did not turn it in on time. I had the work, but my timing was not right. I did

improve in some of this over time. There is still improvement to work on. I plan to improve in these

areas of weaknesses. By working in these areas of weaknesses, I can do a better work in my

studies. I am still learning and trying to understand everything assignment that is given to me. I am

trying to work harder to achieve my goals in life. There has been problems but I still work hard

overcome these obstacles in life. I thank God because he helps me achieve my goals in this class and

other classes. In this class I started off having some good grades but I struggle along the way, I still

have good grades, these are better compared to the past.

My goals for this semester of this year is to improve my grade and to continue to work hard for my

 future careers.

There are many other goals that I  have plan to surpass in this semester. Some of these are to make it

through this year with a passing high grade. I am planning to pass with all A's this semester and have

not only all A's like last semester but to pass it with all hundreds.

Graphic with Narrative on Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity has been here for a long time. Parents are feeding their child fat foods. This

chart demonstrates how obesity has grown over the years.

As it is shown here in the graph, the obesity rates had grown dramatically over the past years.

The obesity rate is still growing at a fast rate. Parents should feed their child nutritional foods. By them

feeding nutritional foods, it may help them lose weight and if more parents help their child loose

weight, obesity rates may go down. Parents should encourage their child to eat healthily. Parents

should learn to eat healthy as well so their child can be able to eat nutritional foods. More children

will need to exercise their bodies so they may be able to cut down on their fat.

Cutting down on fat foods may help the child have a healthy lifestyle. If parents do not change their

eating habits, the future generation will suffer for the same habits that are being learned at the house.

In the article, "Clinical Tracking of Severely Obese Children: A New Growth Chart", it admits, "The

results showed that 39% of children >95th percentile and 59% of children ≥99th percentile had ≥2 risk factors,

respectively, which was significantly greater than children in the 85th to 95th percentile. Both of the higher BMI

groups were much more likely to become obese as adults.1 "  By this, it means that more children are going to

be obese in their adulthood life. The obesity rates are flying through the roof. Parents are responsible

for their child's health. Parent's should see the danger and the damage that their child could suffer or

is suffering.

Image result for childhood obesity and money

As more children are being obese, more problems are also arising. The cost for the rising of obesity

in children are growing fast. In the article, "Over a lifetime, childhood obesity cost $19,000 per child

--ScienceDaily",  it states, "Based on this evidence, the researchers recommend using $19,000 as the

estimated lifetime medical cost of an obese child when compared with a child of normal weight who

maintains a normal weight throughout adult life, and $12,900 per obese child when considering the

possibility of normal weight children becoming overweight or obese in adulthood." Childhood obesity

is costing people a lot of money. Parents should demonstrate the right paths of a healthy

life. Parents are responsible if their child to eat nutritional food. Parent's are responsible for

the food that they bring to the house, this can be healthy food or non-healthy.

In this article, Finkelstein stated, “While the cost estimates are significant, the motivation to prevent

childhood obesity should be there regardless of the financial implications.” By this, he means that

although the cost are high, parents should encourage their child to eat healthy, even if there

 is low money.

Who is Really Responsible for Childhood Obesity?

Who is Really Responsible for Childhood Obesity?
While it is true that parents are responsible for their child’s weight, also are the restaurants that sell these types of food. In “Combating Childhood Obesity”, Ludwig states, “It would seem to make sense that if you don’t want fat on your body, you shouldn’t put fat in your body.” Base on this statement, it is the decision of that person. The person or child consuming these foods are responsible for their own health. Although who are also responsible for the epidemic of this disease are food products that are offer in school where the child have no other choice but to eat what is given at school. In the article "Should Schools Be Responsible for Childhood Obesity Prevention? -The Atlantic" , it states, In April, Kaiser Permanente conducted a nationwide survey and found that 90 percent of respondents believed school should " play a role in reducing obesity in their community" and 64 percent supported it being "a major role."  Moreover, committee Chairman Eduardo Sanchez stated, "It's hard to eat fruit instead of chips or cookies when neighborhood stores carry little fresh produce, or to bike to school on busy roads with no bike lanes."  The child may also not obtain the right amount of exercise during the day. Students are focused on their academics that the students do not have the right amount of time to exercise their body. In the article "Childhood Obesity -Opposing Viewpoints in Context" , it admits, "Part of the reason may be a renewed focus on academics at the expense of time spent at recess or in physical education classes." There are ways to fight childhood obesity, some of the ways are by encouraging others to be involved in community programs that can help the child. Another way to fight childhood obesity are by providing a clean and safe environment in school and to stand against billing. By doing this, the child can improve their health in many ways, The article states, " For example, community programs can encourage youth to be more active by providing clean, safe places to play, schools can provide nutritious lunches for children and work to combat bulling, and education can be offered for parents and children to enable them to make better choices."  Parents should be able to also provide a safe environment where the child can live healthy, eating nutritional foods all starts at home.

How to Prevent Childhood Obesity
There are ways to prevent Childhood Obesity. Some of the ways to prevent this disease are by eating healthy. Eating good nutritional food can improve a child's health. In the article "Preventing Childhood Obesity: Tips for Parents" ,  it admits, "Weight loss is not a good approach for most young children, since their bodies are growing and developing. Overweight children should not be put on a diet unless a physician supervises one for medical reasons. A restrictive diet may not supply the energy and nutrients needed for normal growth and development. - (Tips for Parents  3)                                                                                                                                       Parents should encourage their child to eat healthy. Parents can change their eating habits. Eating healthier can improve their child's health and their own health too. Parents can start a routine of exercise. Sixty minutes of exercise can improve their child's health and mindset. The article admits, "Focus on the family. Do not set overweight children apart. Involve the whole family and work to gradually change the family's physical activity and eating habits." - (Tips for Parents 4)  Eating healthy can not only benefit the child, but it can also benefit the parents. The parents can eat healthier and also can the child of that parent. Not only can the parents eat healthier, but also feel better of how they eat.
Parents have the choice to buy good nutritional food or buy non-nutritional food. In the article, "Preventing Childhood Obesity:Tips for Parents and Caretakers" , it admits, "Balance is the key in helping your child maintain a healthy weight. Balance the calories your child eats and drinks with the calories used through physical activity and normal growth." (AHA 45) Parents can help their child eat well throughout nutritional meals and nutritional snacks. By balancing what their child eat can improve their child's health. Balancing what the child eat can help throughout their adulthood life.

Increase of Childhood Health Issues

                                                                        Increase of Health Issues

Children who are obese also deals with serious health issues. Some of the health issues that a child may have are high blood pressure. High blood pressure comes by eating too much fat foods and not enough low fat foods like vegetables. Children who are obese have trouble walking because of their weight, they have limited mobility. They can later in life experience a disease called "Deep Vein Thrombosis". Deep Vein Thrombosis is when a child has too much fat in their blood system that the veins cannot support all the fat in the blood, so the vein breaks loose and all that blood travels to the lungs where it can be fatal. The child may also experience an increase of sweating. This is when a child has too much fat that their body has to go through an overdrive to cool down. The CDC admits, “Children with obesity are higher risk for having other chronic health conditions and diseases that impact physical health, such as asthma, sleep apnea, bone and joint problems, type 2 diabetes, and risk factors for heart disease".  The child may also have trouble breathing. The fat stored in his body can cause the chest to squeeze his lungs, causing him to snore and have hard time breathing well in his sleep.
The child may also be having trouble with joint problems. This may be because of the too much weight he is carrying in his body. The child may have back issue problems along the way. The bones carry too much weight that it may break and this can be painful. The child can have even more serious issues along the way; some of these issues include heart disease and some cancers.
Children who are having this problem may also experience negative motor performance. Some motor performance with the body involves muscle strength, balance, and walking. The PMC admit, "Changes to the musculoskeletal system in overweight and obese children have been shown to negatively influence motor performance, including muscle strength, balance and walking, through changes in plantar flexion during the swing phase of walking, resulting in a flatter floor".
Through this, parents can be now more aware about their child's health. They can see the serious damage that obesity can make in their lives. One way that parents can improve their child's health, are through eating healthy and exercising as much as possible during the day. This can help decrease the chances of that child to have more serious health issues along the way. Having a healthy body can help their child to have a healthy mind. With a healthy mind, children and adolescence can have a better life. Having a healthy body and mind is crucial because children can learn faster. They are able to understand the lesson that they need to learn in class. It is the responsibility of the parent to bring nutritional food in their homes for their children. Bringing nutritional foods can help their child improve in their weight.

Increase of Childhood Mental Issues and Emotional Issues

                                                                                                                                    Rodriguez 3

                                                       Increase of Childhood Mental Issues

Children who are obese have serious emotional and mental issues throughout their life as a child. They tend to have low self esteem and may feel inferior than most students in school. Many of their friends may start to be apart from the obese child. This can be serious if the child starts to have emotional issues like depression. Children who are obese may feel like they do not fit in a group, or the group may not think he is good enough to be in there with them. All this may cause the child to have suicidal thoughts. He may be thinking negative about himself, he even my cut himself because of his overweight. Based on the article "Obesity can be harmful to your child's mental health", it talks about how being obese can affect the thinking of a child. It admits, " The study also reported that obese boys and girls with low self-esteem had higher rates of loneliness, sadness and nervousness." This is one way that the child can be emotionally sad.
Children who feels depression because of their over weight have low self esteem, or is being bullied by others, and have low grades in school. Many end up committing suicide. In the article of "Obesity can be harmful to your child's health", it admits, “The study found that 26 percent of teens who were teased at school and home reported they had considered suicide, and 9 percent had attempted it. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among adolescents. (Source: Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, "Associations of Weight-Based Teasing and Emotional Well-being Among Adolescents," August 2003)".
The child may start isolating himself or herself because of his or her overweight. Children with this type of mental issue may start hurting himself or others. They may not be very active in activities with other children.
Children with these types of mental issues may feel that they are fat, when they are not. This affects there thinking, and can bring suicidal thoughts. Not all teens and children that are obese only have emotional issues, but children that eat unhealthy have a hard time concentrating on their work. They do not eat nutritional food that can help them stay focus in there school. They may feel depressed or angry. They can feel anxious and may have problems of self control. The child may think that everyone is against him or her, this can affect the child in a long term period. In the article of "Mental Health, Wellness, and Childhood Overweight/Obesity", it describes the percentage of behaviors because of overweight. The article admits, "Unhealthy weight control behaviours were reported by 57% of girls and 33% of boys, and extremely unhealthy behaviours were reported by 12% girls and 5% of boys among 4,476 adolescents in public schools in Minnesota []."  Here are seen the percentage of boys and girls that have an unhealthy behavior because of there unhealthy weight.
More children are having mental issues than in the past because of there own weight. More children and adolescents are thinking about suicide. There are many more ways that this can be looked at. The child could have mental disorders. They may not be able to think straight, this is one way we can see how obesity is affecting their mental mind. They may think that they are going to be always obese and that they cannot fit anywhere in the group in school or in sports. Parents should be aware of these signs at all time. Talking with the child's teacher can help parents know if their child is at risk of hurting himself or others.

Should Parents Be Charged With Child Obesity if their child is overweight?

Should Parents Be charge with Child abuse if they have an obese child?

Parents play a big role in their child's health. Today we are seeing more children and teens being overweight. More children today have serious health issues with their body mass and are obese because of what they eat at home and at school. Many parents do not realize what harm they are doing to their child's health. Parents have a huge responsibility on their child's health. Based on the article "Childhood Obesity and Medical Neglect", parents are responsible for their child's health. The article states, "
Parents are responsible for the care of their children, regardless of whether the cause of a medical condition is a behavior, a disease, or an interaction of the 2." Many parents may give their child fat foods like ice-scream and pizza. Parents should realize that it is fine to give them pizza once in a while, but it is not fine to give them pizza every day.

There are many more reasons for why parents should be responsible for the health of their child. One of the ways are that parents know what foods is nutritional to eat and decides not to buy it for their child and themselves, they decide to buy what is not nutritional like hot dogs and pizza knowing that their child is obese, then that would be consider child abuse.

If starving a child is consider child abuse, then why should overfeeding their child not be an abuse to his or her child? Based on the article "Parents of Obese Children and Charges of Child Abuse", the article admits,"
In other words, if a parent who endangers a child's health by starving her or him can be charged with abuse, why should a parent who endangers a child's health by over-feeding her or him not also be subject to these charges? "

If a parent knows that their child is overweight or obese and do nothing to help him loss weight, then this would be considered a way of the child abuse. If the parents do nothing to help the child, then they would be fine by up to $800 according to BBC, "If food is the problem, it would be up to parents to set a diet and exercise programme, with monthly visits by officials to make sure it's being kept up. After six months, they would examine the child again. Parents would face fines of up to $800 (£525) if there was no improvement within a year."

This can be very controversial in different countries like Puerto Rico. Poor countries may not have the money to buy enough nutritional foods. Because of their economy as a family or as a parent, they may not always have the money to buy good nutritional foods. Based on the article "Could fining parents cut childhood obesity" , it admits, " But the Puerto Rico obesity plan has echoes of the action taken in the UK and elsewhere to combat persistent truancy from school. In March last year, it was revealed that a record number of truancy fines had been handed to parents but that persistent truancy was falling. But there has been criticism that there is no link and that fines do not work. Some critics believe fines disproportionately affect poor parents."

In many countries were economy is low for parents, it is not always the parents fault. Parents try to give their child a place to live and a place to eat were they have to survive to keep their family in good standing. This can be seen in Puerto Rico and not only Puerto Rico but also Mexico and Africa. Economics have a big role in these types of countries. People have to survive, families have to survive. For the low economy that he or she has, they tend to buy cheap foods that have a lot of cholesterol and sugar. Parents know what is good for their child, parents that do not have the problem of economy, and buys fat foods knowing that their child is obese, should be charge with child neglect.

I agree that parents are also responsible on the child's weight. The child's health is important, no child should pass through this situation. Good eating habits are beneficial to the child's health. A good exercise everyday can help the child maintain healthy. Eating too much fast foods can be harmful. It can lead to diabetes, strokes, high cholesterol, and mental disorder. In conclusion, parents have the major responsibility on the child's health.

Introduction to Child Obesity

                                                          Childhood obesity

Child obesity has been around for a long time. From drinking soda, to eating chips, and many other fat foods.FRAGMENT Obesity is now a global pandemic issue. Understanding the risk factors that this has can prevent people from becoming obese.
So what is obesity? Obesity is stored fats in the body. Many times because of bad eating habits, malnutrition, lack of exercise, and genes. The most common factor in finding obesity are in family members. Family members have similar eating habits. This also can cause the child to eat the same way as their family members. According to scientist they admitted, “poor sleeping patterns whether it is too much or too little sleep can lead to hormonal changes and an increase in appetite”.SOURCE
There are other risk factors to consider when having obesity like heart disease in young children and teens. This may also harm the blood vessel system and is a major cause of gallstones, osteoarthritis and respiratory problems.
Over the years, we have seen people overweight. This is not only a health issue but also an economic issue. People are buying more fast foods and less nutritional foods. This is causing for our children to have problems at school and medical issues along the way. In 1985 there was 20% obesity rate from ages 14 to 19 years old. Over time this has increased dramatically. In 2008 there was an increase of obesity of 25% to 35% in children and adolescents. This is still increasing over time. This is a very alarming rate. More of our children are overweight.SOURCE?
So how can we stop obesity? There are many ways to help prevent obesity, one of them ways are to eat healthier. Eating good nutrition can fight obesity. Eating good vegetables can help children and adolescents lose weight. Being physically active can prevent early childhood obesity. Some ways to be active can be by playing sports like soccer or basketball. Exercising the body is a good way to keep healthy. Running is a very good way to prevent children from having obesity. That is not the only ways to fight obesity, going to the gym is a good way for children and adolescents to be fit. Cutting down on junk food can really help them lose a few pounds. Having a good night sleep can prevent some of these problems.
What is important to know is that your child do not have to deal with this problem. Choosing a good healthy lifestyle can prevent your child from becoming obese. Cutting down on fat foods can help your child from having these issues along the way. Daily exercise can help your child from having any of these issues. Families can have a healthier eating style. Children see what their family members do, they tend to do the same things sometimes. There are many ways to prevent early childhood obesity, by doing these things everyday can cut down a lot of fat.
60 minutes of outside activities can help children lose some extra weight off them. Outside activities with other children is a healthy way to prevent them from having obesity. Buying fewer soft-drinks and high calorie foods can really cut down some fat. Choosing a healthy lifestyle can help your child from becoming obese. Eating the right foods can be good for your child's body and mind. Exercising everyday is a good way to prevent these health issues. If your child is obese, there is still hope. By doing these daily activities and eating healthy can cut down on some fat. Run every day at least an hour of activity outside can help you lose the extra pounds that your child do not need.
Working out every day can help your child to have a healthy lifestyle, having a gym membership and working out there can help you and your child lose some extra weight.

Should parents be charged with child abuse if the parents have an obese child? Based on "Parents of

Obese Children and Charges of Child Abuse", the parents have a responsibility to protect their child

from harm and abuse. If the parent fails to protect their child from becoming obese and fails to address

his or her medical issue, the state can intervene through their child abuse laws as stated in this article,

"The rationale for invoking child abuse laws for severely obese children is that the child faces imminent

health risks and the parent has repeatedly failed to address these medical problems, thus meeting the

definition for mandatory child abuse reporting "(Murtagh & Ludwig, 2011). This can lead to sever mental

 issues and emotional issues.

So how can child obesity affect the mental health of a child or their emotions? There are many ways

that a child can be affected. The child may be bullied at school by the way he or she looks. This could

lead the child to eat less or eat more unhealthy foods. The child could commit suicide because of the

way he or she looks and the way other students at school make him or her feel. The foods that the child

eats may not be the right nutrition that he or she needs. He or she may have a hard time concentrating

at school and this is by the malnutrition that their parents provide to their child.

Child obesity can lead to severe health issues. The child may have a hard time breathing. The

possibilities for the child to have a stroke increases by 30% to 40%, this is according to researchers,

"Children who are dangerously overweight may already have a 30%-40% higher chance of

either suffering a stroke or developing heart disease in later life, Oxford University

researchers found. " The risks here are higher if the child is obese at early age. This can

affect the way they function as a person and the way they think.

Children who are obese are most likely to have emotional issues. This can lead to low self esteem and

poor self image. The child may feel that he or she cannot be the same as the other students in school.

The child may be going through bulling at school and may feel embarrassed to talk about the

situation in school. All this can lead to suicide if these signs of emotions are not detected in time.

Parents and teachers should be aware of these signs and emotional disorder that their child may have.

It is important that parents and teachers can help him or her overcome these obstacles through good

nutrition. Eating healthy and having good nutrition can be the difference between being obese or

having a healthy lifestyle.
